Journaling #2

Pain Observations

Everyday this week:

  1. Write down any observations you had during your movement lessons.

    • these could be thoughts or emotions that came up. Movement that seemed easy or movement that seemed hard. How the lessons made you feel afterward or even the next day.

  2. Write at least 3 observations related to your pain.

    • These can be any observations that come up for you when you experience pain or when you're trying to avoid experiencing pain.

    • Examples:

      • My foot feels worst at night.

      • My shoulder flares up after I take out the trash.

      • My neck hurts after I visit my mother.

      • My back hurts when I'm bent over.

    • Writing these observations will help shed light on patterns for your pain and help you uncover potential pain triggers.

    • Go back and reread your observations. Look for any signs that you might be making judgements like:

      • My long work day makes my foot hurt.

      • Taking out the trash makes my shoulder worse.

      • My mother causes my neck pain.

      • Bending over hurts my back.

    • It's a fine line, but keep an eye out for cause/effect thinking, judging, or blaming. If you find any of these in your writing, notice it. This is good! Writing down and rereading your thoughts will help to separate any negative emotional components or thought patterns accompanying your pain.
